NLC irregularities: Probe report sent to COAS

An inquiry committee probing alleged embezzlement of billion of rupees in National Logistics Cell (NLC) has presented its comprehensive report to Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Dunya News reported on Friday. According to ISPR, the committee carried out audit of both Auditor Generals and NLC records and recorded video and black and white statements of the accused. Private auditors have been assigned the task in this connection. The committee also suggested inclusion regarding action against the accused. The COAS set up a 3-member inquiry team comprising Corps Commander Bahawalpur Khalid Naeem Lodhi besides two major generals to probe into the alleged corruption in NLC. It is pertinent to mention that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly unearthed corruption of alleged mismanagement of over Rs2 billion by National Logistics Cell (NLC) last year. The allegations involved two retired lieutenant-generals and one major-general. Saeedur Rehman the NLCs chief finance officer from 2004 to 2008 and a sitting member of Capital Development Authority is one of the civil servants who have also been blamed for investing the money into stock market. The ill-advised investment is said to have led to the loss. According to several sources, five employees of the NLC three of them generals and two bureaucrats have been held responsible for the organisations ill-fated investment in the stock exchange from 2004 to 2008.They are two officers in charge of NLC, Lt-Gen (retd) Khalid Munir Khan (January 2005 to June 2005) and Lt-Gen (retd) Mohammad Afzal Muzaffar (June 2005 to October 2008); NLC Director-General Maj-Gen (retd) Khalid Zaheer Akhtar (July 2002 to January 2008), Director of Finance and Accounts Najibur Rehman (October 2002 to April 2007) and Chief Finance Officer Saeedur Rehman (June 2004 to October 2008).
