Lt General Zubair Mehmood Hayat has been appointed as the Chairman of Joint Staff Committee

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Lieutenant General Qamar Javed Bajwa of Baloch Regiment of Infantry Division has been designated as Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on Saturday.

Reportedly, Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif has chosen Lt General Bajwa out of the five names that were under consideration to lead the military as General Raheel Sharif is set to retire on November 29 after a three-year tenure.

Meanwhile, Lt General Zubair Mehmood Hayat has been appointed as the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC). It should be mentioned here that brother to Zubair Hayat, Umer Hayat is serving as the Chairman of Pakistan Ordnance Factories in Wah Cantonment.

Pakistan Army has been led by three army chiefs from Baloch Regiment in the past namely, Yahya Khan, Mirza Aslam Baig and Ashfaq Pervez Kayani.

Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif said on Friday that the premier was not deliberating upon four but five names as Lt General Ikramul Haq, Gujranwala Corps Commander was also among the list.

Army chief designate was commissioned in Pakistan Army on October 24, 1980. 

Now General Bajwa, has served as the Inspector General of Evaluation and Training at the General Headquarters (GHQ). He also has the honour of leading Pakistan Armys biggest formation, 10 Corps.

Successor of Chief of the Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif had served as chief of Force Command Northern Areas and led a peace mission to Congo as Brigadier as well.

Wajahat Saeed Khan, National Security Correspondent of Dunya News has said that 10 Corps looks after the area starting from Rawalpindi and all the way upto Siachen which goes on to show just how proficient the new chief is. 

According to the analyst, appointment of Lt General Qamar Javed Bajwa has sent a significant signal to arch-rival India as the fresh army chief remained clear over stance towards India all through his service.
