Who will replace Gen Raheel Sharif as new COAS?

The final decision will be taken by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in coming days.

(Dunya News) – A day after outgoing Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif kicked off his farewell visits, names of four most senior and experienced army generals are circulating in the media, among which, one is likely to be picked as new Army Chief.

However, the final decision will be taken by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

All four candidates are from the Pakistan Military Academy’s (PMA) 62nd long course but have had different career paths.

Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat’s name is on the top of seniority list. He is currently serving as Chief of General Staff (CGS) while he has also performed duties as Director General Strategic Plan Division and Corps Commander Bahawalpur.

Second in the list is Lieutenant General Ishfaq Nadeem who is Corps Commander in Multan. He was also appointed as Chief of General Staff and Director General Military Operations. He has contributed a lot to design operation Zarb-e-Azb.

Lieutenant General Javed Iqbal Ramday, currently supervising Bahawalpur Corps, is present on third number. He has served as General Officer Commanding in Swat operation while he was also functioned as president of National Defence University.

Lieutenant General Qamar Javed Bajwa is working as Inspector General Training and Evaluation at General Headquarters (GHQ). He has also worked as Commander of Rawalpindi Corps.

On the other hand, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that the final decision will be taken by the premier while General Raheel Sharif’s opinion will be vital in this regard.

He also felicitated General Raheel over successful tenure that spanned over three years while he said that the fresh leader would have to continue the series of successes.
