Anti-polio campaign begins across Pakistan

Pakistan hopes to be removed from the list of polio-endemic countries by 2018.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - A campaign against polio disease has been launched across the country today (Monday).

Pakistan hopes to be removed from the list of polio-endemic countries by 2018 by achieving its goal of no fresh cases for a year.

Polio is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis within hours. It mainly affects children under the age of five.


CAMPAIGN IN PUNJAB


Polio campaign has been launched in 36 districts of Punjab including Lahore where more than 43 thousand teams will go door to door to vaccinate around eighteen point four million children below the age of five.


SINDH


Six-day campaign is being held in six districts of Karachi including Malir, Korangi, South, West, East and Central and other districts of Sindh.

Polio drops will be administered to around 2.2 million children in the province.


KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA


More than six point five million children will be administered anti-polio drops during three-day campaign in the province and FATA.

19,320 teams have been formed for the drive while more than 23 thousand security officials will escort them in the urban areas.


BALOCHISTAN


Three-day anti-polio drive also started in 30 districts of Balochistan in which over two point four million children will be administered polio drops.
