Sabeen Mahmud, owner of the famous T2F (The 2nd Floor) of Karachi, had left us on this day last year

LAHORE: (Web Desk) - It’s been one year today. Sabeen Mahmud, the owner of the famous T2F (The 2nd Floor) of Karachi, had left us on this day last year after being fatally shot by a terrorist while she was on her way home after work. Sabeen had hosted a debate at her T2F on Balochistan and was shot dead while going back home. The debate was also attended by one of the most prominent Baloch rights’ activists Mama Qadeer.

Sabeen’s murder was mourned throughout the country and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had personally ordered an inquiry into the murder. A military spokesperson had announced that the murderers would be tried in a military court. As a matter of fact, they were. Saad Aziz, a terrorist involved in Safura carnage as well, was accused of being the mastermind of the attack and had also confessed to having killed the revered human rights  activist.

Aziz claimed that he had shot Sabeen while another of his aides was riding the motorcycle and he was sitting at the back. He told that he had killed Sabeen for holding a rally on Valentine’s Day. The IBA Karachi graduate said that he had been following Sabeen for days and had attended several of the events at T2F. He told that he attended the seminar on Balochistan ‘Unsilencing Balochistan’ at the T2F on the day of the murder and then followed Sabeen as she left in her car. As the car stopped at Sunset Boulevard signal, Saad shot Sabeen dead.

The lady who stood all her life for ‘unsilencing’ people, to let them have their say, was thus silenced by an IBA-graduate turned into terrorist. One year has passed yet the case is still pending and no convictions have yet been made. But the people remember her. As many as 160 artists have come forward to support her T2F and the mission that the terrorists so hated her for has continued despite Sabeen’s death.
