12 militants killed as security forces repulse cross-border attack in Lower Kurram
Nearly fifty terrorists from Afghanistan sneaked into Pakistani territory.
PESHAWAR (Web Desk) – At least twelve terrorists were killed and several others injured when security forces repulsed an attack on a check-post in Lower Kurram Agency’s Mangaro area near the Pak-Afghan border this morning.
Nearly fifty terrorists from Afghanistan sneaked into Pakistani territory around early morning and attacked the check-post with heavy weapons.
Security forces strongly retaliated and killed fourteen militants on the spot and injured several others. Other militants fled under the cover of darkness.
Security forces suffered no casualties in the attack, a government administrator said.
The security forces have cordoned off the area and launched search operation against the militants.
Lower Kurram is one of the most sensitive tribal areas as it borders three Afghan provinces and at one point was one of the key routes for militant movement across the border.
The region was claimed by the military to have been cleared of insurgents during an operation a couple of years ago, however, militants still carry out sectarian attacks and also target security forces occasionally.
Afghanistan and Pakistan share a 2,250-kilometer (1,400-mile) border and militants from both sides routinely launch cross-border attacks before fleeing back over the border. Much of the border area is remote and off limits to reporters.
Also Thursday, police officer Jamshed Khan said a bomb targeting police at a checkpoint near the northwestern city of Peshawar killed a police officer.
