Nawaz-Vajpayee Lahore declaration didn't mention Kashmir: Musharraf
Musharraf says Kiyani's extension was unpopular, govt failed to carry forward Swat operation gains
LAHORE: (Dunya News) – Former President Pervez Musharraf has on Sunday said that the Nawaz-Vajpayee Lahore declaration did not even mention Kashmir. He said that the extension of former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani was an unpopular decision. He added that the previous government failed to carry forward the gains of Swat operation, reported Dunya News.
Talking to Moeed Pirzada on Dunya News’ show ‘Tonight with Moeed Pirzada’, Pervez Musharraf said that he never said General Raheel Sharif would ask for an extension. He said that he demanded extension for General Raheel Sharif keeping in view the situation in the country. He further stated that Kiyani’s extension was an unpopular decision and wasn’t taken favourably.
The former president also said that the Nawaz-Vajpayee Lahore agreement in 1999 made no mention of Kashmir. “There is no truth to the notion that Pakistan army doesn’t want a solution to the Kashmir issue”, he added. He said that a lot happened for Kashmir during his government and even an agreement had been reached to lower the number of army deployment on the Line of Control. He claimed that the then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was ready to visit Pakistan and formally make an agreement or two.
Talking about Indian premier Modi’s visit to Pakistan, Musharraf said that it is good but Modi is anti-Pakistan.
