Year's first swine flu death reported in Lahore, toll reaches three in Punjab

No separate ward has been formed for the treatment of swine flu patients in hospitals of Lahore.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – After Multan, Lahore has also witnessed a death because of swine flu as an elderly woman died due to the disease.

The woman identified as Tahira bibi was admitted in a private hospital four days ago. National Institute of Health in Islamabad declared the blood sample of the victim positive to swine flu and instructed the administration to take precautionary measures but the disease claimed woman’s life, talking toll to three in the province.

According to details, no separate ward has been formed for the treatment of swine flu patients in hospitals of Lahore due to which their blood samples are being sent to Islamabad for test.

Earlier, two women that were admitted in Nishtar Medical Institute (NMI) died on Sunday due to swine flu while as many as seven more cases have also been surfaced.

The hospital’ administration has formed an isolation ward in ward no 27 for proper treatment and checkup of the patients. The virus has been confirmed in seven people however, the number of suspected cases of the disease has reached 18.

Laboratory test of three females which include 53-year-old Shehnaz, 30-year-old Aqsa and three-year-old Azra have been sent to Islamabad for analysis.

Swine flu virus mostly attack weaker and less immune people.

In 2009-10, the H1N1 swine flu pandemic spread from central Mexico to 74 other countries including India, killing an estimated 284,000 people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than 2,700 died in India of swine flu between May 2009 and December 2010. Last year, India recorded 218 swine flu-related deaths and 937 cases, down from 2013, when 699 died.
