Independent candidate defeats PML-N's Zafar Ali Shah in Islamabad's UC-30
The former senator has termed his defeat a 'conspiracy'
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) former senator Zafar Ali Shah has lost in local body (LB) elections in the federal capital.
The former senator has termed his defeat a ‘conspiracy’.
Shah was representing PML-N in Union Council-30 (UC) as chairman in the elections.
On November 30, Shah in an exclusive talk with Dunya News said that he would be a contender of mayorship if he wins. Shah’s failure in the LB polls is definitely something that the ruling party did not see coming.
Intriguingly, the former senator did not hold rivals but PML-N members responsible also for chalking out a ‘plot’ for his defeat.
The Constitutional Law expert made headlines on Monday for arguing with the polling staff over photocopied national identity card.
Shah had misused his influential status to cast vote using a duplicate identity card. The former senator expected the staffers to let him off the hook over ‘simple’ formalities.
As the staff demanded CNIC, he pulled out a duplicate copy. The politically influential person was obviously not used to hearing ‘no’ as an answer.
Shah lashed out at the staff and threatened them of service terminations. The matter was then given in hands of the Presiding Officer appointed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The officer did his best to convince the resented politician but efforts were in vain.
On the other hand Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s spokesperson Naeemul Haq demanded the ECP to take action against Shah. He said that no person is above the law.
Meanwhile, PTI supporters raised slogans against him for arguing with the polling staff on illegal grounds.
