Indian police arrest more Hurriyet leaders to prevent Million March

SRINAGAR (Web Desk / AP) - Indian police during crackdown against Hurriyet leaders and activists arrested more members including Bilal Siddiqi, Mushtaq-ul-Islam and Ghulam Nabi Zaki from different areas of India-held Kashmir.

The police during house raids also arrested Hurriyet activists, Arshid Aziz, Muhammad Ayub Naikoo, Tanveer Ahmad and Imtiyaz Ahmad and raided their residences in all parts of Kashmir Valley.The arrest of leaders and activists is part of the crackdown on Hurriyet leaders to foil the Million March to be conducted in Srinagar on Saturday. Call for the march has been given by the forum patronised by the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, and supported by other pro-freedom leaders and organisations to protest against the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s visit to the Kashmir Valley on the day.

Over 2,000 Hurriyet leaders and activists including Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Aasiya Andrabi, Fareeda Bahenji, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Mohammad Yousuf Naqash, Syed Bashir Andrabi, Mohammad Yousuf Mir, Ghulam Nabi Sumjhi, Abdul Ahad Para, Ghulam Mohammad Khan Sopori, Mohammad Yaseen Attai, Muhammad Ramzan Khan, Farooq Ahmad Tawheedi, Mohammad Ayaz Akbar, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Syed Imtiyaz Haider, Mohammad Shafi Rishi, Mir Hafeezullah, Raja Merajudin Kalwal, Engineer Farooq Ahmad Khan, Peer Saifullah, Zafar Akbar Butt, Javaid Ahmad Mir, Hilal Ahmad War, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Shabbir Ahmad Dar, Moulvi Bashir Ahmad, Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Showket Ahmad Bakhshi, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, Shahid-ul-Islam and Fahmeeda Sofi have been detained in their houses or police stations to stop them from leading the march.

Authorities have dramatically tightened security in parts of Indian-held Kashmir to prevent protests ahead of a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indian forces erected steel barricades and laid razor wire on roads and ordered residents to stay indoors in old parts of Srinagar, the largest city in the region. The city s main mosque was cordoned off and Friday prayers were barred.

Kashmiris are observing Jammu Martyrs Day in wke of which Kashmiri leaders have called for a protest at the mosque to honor tens of thousands of Muslims that were killed in riots with Hindus in 1947.
