The newly built jail could keep at least 3,500 prisoners

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Pervez Khattak on Wednesday has inaugurated a high-security jail in Mardan.

The newly built jail could keep at least 3,500 prisoners among 250 extremely dangerous prisoners.

The CM, while talking to the media after the inauguration, said that dangersome prisoners would be shifted to Mardan jail. While the existing jail in Mardan would be converted to a family park, he added. Khattak said that there is no shortage of security personnel in the province.

He said that at least 3,500 prisoners could be kept in the jail built near Sheikh Maltun on Mardan Road. The penitentiary has been built on a large area of at least 342 canals.

Separate barracks have been made in the lockup for as many as 250 militants at a time. Security cameras have been installed in the cells for prisoners under observance. The prison has a total of 36 barracks.

At least 99 cells each have been reserved for juveniles and women prisoners.

The jail also has a mosque that accommodates as many as 500 namazis and a hospital comprising of 180 beds. The house of correction has an execution cell for death row inmates.

The main control room of the jail is equipped with advanced gadgets and could only be opened with programmed thumb impressions. However, the security camera installed at the gate of the jail was found broken before shifting of prisoners could start.

The separate compartments for juveniles could result in halting disgusting acts that were reported in the past. In Peshawar jail, policemen reportedly brought minors from their lockups and offered them to prisoners for sex.

A 15-year-old victim of sexual abuse lodged a complaint in district judge’s court. He has nominated as many as four policemen in the case.
