LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday banned broadcast of any news related to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain.

A three-member bench of the LHC headed by Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi directed the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) not to air Altaf Hussain s pictures, audio or visuals.

The cases were filed by Maqsood Awan, Abullah Malik, Advocate Aftab Virk and others against the MQM chief for his anti-army remarks.

During the case hearing, Additional Attorney General submitted a notification regarding ban on Altaf Hussain’s speeches. The state counsel informed court that the government will not tolerate any violation of PEMRA rules.

Meanwhile, the court summoned replies from the government and DG PEMRA and directed the concerned authorities not to publish or air any news regarding Altaf Hussain till further notice.

Hussain has been living in self-imposed exile in Britain since 1992 military crackdown in Karachi and obtained British citizenship a decade later.

From his base in London, Hussain has been a towering figure within the party, addressing massive street rallies attended by tens of thousands in Karachi through a loudspeaker connected to a telephone.

Recently, several cases were registered against him at different police stations under terrorism laws over a speech criticising the military establishment.
