Court grants bail to Musharraf in Benazir murder case
Pervez Musharrafs bail plea was heard by ATC judge Habib ur Rehman.
RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) - An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Monday approved the bail application of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.
The Anti Terrorism Court issued the bail order for Musharraf, who has been detained in his farmhouse on the edge of Islamabad since April 19 on charges of conspiracy to murder two-time prime minister Bhutto, who was assassinated in a gun and bomb attack in 2007 in Rawalpindi.
Justice Habibur Rehman said Musharraf will have to pay two surety bonds worth one million rupees ($10,000) each.
Ealier today, Musharraf’s lawyer Salman Safdar argued that the decision of not carrying out Benazir Bhutto’s autopsy was taken by Asif Ali Zardari and his client cannot be held responsible for this act.
He said that it is responsibility of the police and not the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe a murder case.
Musharraf’s counsel further argued that 24 witnesses had recorded their statements but none gave a single statement against the former president.
Interpol received four applications for his client’s arrest, however, no action was taken due to lack of evidence, he added.
Meanwhile, Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar objected to the application, stating that Musharraf might flee the country if court accepted his bail.
