Illicit kidney transplant: Under custody suspect makes shocking revelations
The suspect is only MBBS and doesn't have the FCPS degree, said FIA.
LAHORE (Dunya News) – Under custody suspect Dr Zafar on Monday has confessed to have given anesthesia to more than 100 people for the purpose of illegal kidney transplantation.
In his statement, Dr Zafar said that he used to give anesthesia to the people on the directives of Dr Fawad.
According to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the suspect has only done MBBS and doesn’t have the degree of Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (FCPS).
Earlier, FIA arrested key suspect Saqib Afzal along with one female and two male accomplices who were running two operation theatres on Multan Road in Lahore.
Spokesman to FIA, Hammad said that the department had also uncovered an illegal kidney donation racket in Lahore and arrested six people, including two doctors, after raiding a house where unauthorised surgeries were reportedly underway.
Earlier, Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination had suggested to sentence criminals involved in illegal kidney trafficking to 10 years in prison along with Rs one million fine.
In Pakistan, organs can only be donated by close relatives and buying and selling them is illegal.
However, a chronic shortage of organs for transplant has fuelled a black market, with acute poverty forcing some people to sell their kidneys to eke out a living.
