22-year-old girl gang raped, killed in Rawalpindi
CM Punjab has taken the notice of the incident and has demanded report from RPO.
RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – A 22-year-old girl was thrown off a three-storey building after gang-rape in Rawalpindi today (Saturday).
According to police, the body of the victim was recovered outside a house in Rawalpindi’s Bahria Town Phase VIII who was pushed down from a building after alleged molestation by three suspects. Police sources further told that one of the suspects also sustained wounds on resistance of girl.
Station House Officer Rawat (SHO) Malik Asif Nawaz claimed to have arrested the injured criminal and launched an investigation into the matter however, the case will be registered after the post mortem of the corpse.
He revealed that the deceased was a resident of Chakwal while the under custody suspect came from Vehari.
According to preliminary investigation, the scratches on the victim’s body clearly show that she was brutally assaulted by the suspects.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Punjab (CM) Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and directed Regional Police Officer (RPO) to submit a report as early as possible.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sajid Gondal stated the bereaved family told that the victim girl was missing from past three days whereas he said that the boy and girl became friends on social networking website Facebook.
Sajid Gondal further revealed that the suspect and girl were preparing for CSS examinations.
Physical and sexual violence against women are widespread in Pakistan.
Parliamentary records show that some 14,583 rape cases were registered in Pakistan between 2009-2014, while only 1,041 offenders were convicted.
Earlier this month, a step was taken towards punishing the sexual abuse of girls with life imprisonment or even death after an influential parliamentary committee voted to amend current laws.
The National Assembly’s standing committee had approved the proposal by lawmaker Shaista Perveiz Malik.
The amendment only appears to address the sexual abuse of girls aged under 14, not boys.
Under the existing penal code, the punishment for rape ranges from a minimum of ten years’ incarceration to the death penalty, but it does not specify the victim’s age or gender.
The bill will now come before lawmakers in both parliamentary chambers, who are set to pass it into law.
Pakistan ended a six-year moratorium on the death penalty last year, at first just for terror-related charges but later for offences including murder, drug smuggling, blasphemy and treason.
