Tajik prisoner gets maximum term for scissor murder of jail chief

The governor of the prison in southern Tajikistan's Khatlon province died before reaching hospital.

DUSHANBE (AFP) - A Tajik court extended a prisoner s jail term to the maximum 30 years after the former professional hairdresser stabbed his prison governor to death with scissors while giving him a haircut, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The 29-year-old prisoner stabbed the prison governor 17 times in the head and body after being summoned to his office to cut his hair in February.

The governor of the prison in southern Tajikistan s Khatlon province died before reaching hospital.

The prisoner was already serving a 17-and-a-half-year prison term for stabbing a young man 57 times with a knife after they quarrelled.

The mountainous Central Asian country is the poorest former Soviet republic, with around 40 percent of the population living in poverty.
