Pakistan Steel Mills workers await salaries for four months

The government last released salary for the month of March on June 22.

KARACHI (Dunya News) - Pakistan Steel Mills workers anxiously waiting for the salaries to be released by the government as around four months overdue payments are pending, said an official of the steel unit.

The government last released salary for the month of March on June 22, since than we are waiting for another announcement, the official stated. 

“Now salary for April, May, June and July are due while August, fifth month about to end”, he added. The workers are facing hardship, some of them sold their holdings like car and valuable while other officials borrowed money to pay off their debts.

For the last two years, Pakistan Steel Mills has been closed after Sui Southern Gas stopped supply on the amount not cleared by the steel unit.

“We urge the government that the Steel Mills has the capacity to at least bear the salary expenses if start running on regular basis. Both the companies are state-run Sui Southern Gas and Pakistan Steel Mills, why government could not intervene in the matter and resolve the issue promptly," the official said.
